5 FREE Ways to Improve your SEO

What is SEO? SEO stands for Search Engine Optimisation and is the process of optimising the content (words) used on your website, online listings and social media profiles to help your business show up in certain key word searches. Basically it all boils down to speaking the same language as your customer, on and off the web, and spreading your footprint as wide as possible.

A localised SEO strategy is essential for small businesses. With a strategy more focused on your local area, your business can compete with the big brands who advertise at a national level with huge marketing budgets. A 2017 ReviewTrackers’ study even found that 35% of all search traffic is local. So what can your business do to keep it local?

1. Create a Google My Business Account. Once you have created your account and updated your business information, all of that information will be added to your Business Profile, which appears in Google Search local results, the Google Search Knowledge Panel, and Google Maps.

2. Get Regular Reviews from your Happy Customers or Clients. This doesn't just encourage more customers to choose you, it optimises your search engine presence on the web! You can read my blog post about this here.

3. Keep it current! Updating your website, social media or blog regularly raises a hand and tells Google, "Hey, we're still here!"

4. Take Advantage of Online Business Directories. Online business directories like Yelp, Yellow and Neighbourly to name a few are a great resource with free and paid options to suit your budget. Listing your business wherever you can increases your reach across the web. Just be sure to write unique descriptions for each business listing you make as Google penalises copy and paste!

5. Create Backlinks. Backlinks are links pointing back to your website. Online business directories are one great way to do this. You can also create great content on your website to share on your social media or that others will want to share, partner up with local businesses to share each others content, and encourage your customers, family and friends to share your website.
